The food in Peru is good - very good in fact. From ceviche to lomo saltado - it is fresh and very plentiful. Coming to Arequipa from Cusco, we were intrigued by the specialties of the area that we hadn't encountered anywhere else. From queso helado, which deserved a special mention in its own right to the delicious picanterias scattered around the city - we were definitely in for a gourmet adventure. Chupe de Camarones (front and centre of image): A decadent shrimp chowder. Cuy: guinea pig - no other words needed! Lomo saltado: a tasty mix of beef stir fried with onions, tomatoes and a variety of herbs and spices. Causitas: generally made of mashed potato with a variety of fillings. Queso helado: a type of Arequipenan ice cream. Picarones: fried rings made from a pumpkin base served with a sweet molasses.
