a quiet christmas in merida

We spent a lovely quiet Christmas in Merida, Mexico. We visited a fair two nights before Christmas, returning Christmas Eve only to find it was rained out.

Christmas morning was purely a family affair. Santa had come early in the form of a new laptop and camera so we could continue to document our travels and work as we go. Matthew was up way too early. Emilia would have slept all day if we let her.

We went to the Hyatt to enjoy a relaxing Christmas lunch. No dishes, no cleaning - the best way to enjoy Christmas in my opinion.

From our family to yours - we would like to wish you a happy new year with plenty of travel and adventure in 2017.

Happy Mother's Day from my daughter to me!

This is a song she wrote and sang (with some help and some awesome accompaniment from one of our lodgers).  Great job girls!

And what's more, we even managed to sneak away from the hostel for a quiet Mother's Day lunch in Pisac.

The kids were very well behaved (wonders will never cease) and allowed my husband and I to relax and eat a meal in relative peace.

happy new year

We spent a quiet New Year's Eve in Cusco.  We went to El Molino market and checked out all the lucky yellow underwear and other traditional items they sell.  I can honestly say you can have too much yellow underwear as this market was living proof of that!  Wow - it was definitely a sight to behold.

Both kids were asleep before midnight but we woke them up to see the fireworks.  Only Matthew decided to stay awake for them; Emilia struggled to stay awake and was soon back in the Land of Nod.

She did enjoy her time with the sparklers however - Matthew didn't like them at all.  Maybe next year!

All the best to friends and family for 2014 and may you have an adventurous year!

a quiet Christmas and a trip to ollantaytambo

We spent a quiet Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at home in Cusco just hanging out and enjoying the peace and quiet.  We were all set to go to San Sebastian for the festivities but unfortunately it rained all afternoon so we decided just to stay indoors and make the most of just being at  home.

We opted for a no-fuss Christmas this year - minus the Christmas meal - just an eat what you want, do what you want kind of day and it worked well.

I really like that Christmas can be a no-stress time for the whole family.

After our quiet Christmas Day we decided that we would go to Ollantaytambo and just hang out for a couple of days at the Full Moon Lodge, taking in the cafes and restaurants and walking around town.

The scenery in that part of the world is just gorgeous and we always like to visit someplace new to amuse ourselves.

The bus ride is only short - about an hour and a half - so just long enough to feel like a vacation but not too far so they get terribly bored.

The hostel was lovely - the kids enjoyed having some outdoor space and while we didn't do too much over the days we were there - we enjoyed just spending time relaxing and not having to worry about being anywhere or doing anything.

We were disconnected from the world for 3 days and it was lovely!  No tv.  No phone.  No internet.  Just heavenly.

viva el peru

Today was Peru's Independence Day. While there were no big parades happening in Plaza De Armas (much to our surprise), there were plenty of parades happening in the street next to our hostel.

Each time we heard the music, we ran out to see the dancers and the entertainers perform in their lively fashion - they as well as the onlookers were having a fun time (and again plenty of beer was being consumed by all!).

Emilia loved the colourful costumes, in particular the boots the girls wore (she did think the skirts on the outfits were a little short - thank goodness!).

Matthew hated the fire crackers and we had to cover his ears each time they went off but he is coming around to the fact that they go off on these special events.
